Which Cheer Shoes Should I Buy for My Daughter?

What Cheer shoes should I get?

Simon Grigg |

A simple guide for mums buying cheer shoes for the first time

If your daughter has recently started cheerleading, you may already have discovered that choosing the right cheer shoes is not quite as simple as buying a pair of ordinary trainers.

Perhaps her coach has mentioned a brand name. Perhaps other girls in the squad are wearing Nfinity, Kaepa, Nike or Zephz. Or perhaps your daughter has come home from training asking for “proper cheer shoes” and you are not entirely sure where to start.

Do not worry — you are not alone.

At Living Cheer, we regularly help mums choose cheer shoes for daughters who are just starting out, moving up a level, joining a competition team or upgrading from their first pair. This guide is designed to make the decision clearer, calmer and easier.

The most important thing to remember is this:

The best cheer shoe is the one that suits your daughter’s level, role, fit and club requirements.

There is no single perfect cheer shoe for everyone, but there is usually a sensible choice for where your daughter is in her cheerleading journey.

And if you are worried about ordering the wrong size, please do not panic. Shoes can be returned for a refund or swapped quickly and efficiently for a different size, subject to our returns policy. We will include a link to our returns policy so you can order with confidence.

Why does my daughter need proper cheer shoes?

Cheerleading is not the same as general fitness, dance or PE. It involves a mix of jumps, stunts, tumbling, sharp arm motions and routines performed on indoor floors or cheer mats.

That means ordinary trainers are not always suitable.

Cheer shoes are designed to be:

  • Lightweight, so your daughter can move quickly and confidently

  • Flexible, helping with jumps, motions and tumbling

  • Supportive, especially for beginners learning new skills

  • Grippy, helping with control on indoor cheer surfaces

  • Secure-fitting, so the foot does not slide around inside the shoe

A running shoe may feel comfortable, but it is usually too bulky for cheer. Fashion trainers may look good, but they are not designed for stunts, jumps or mat work. Dance shoes are also not the same as cheer shoes, as they often lack the structure and grip needed for cheerleading.

If your daughter is training regularly, proper cheer shoes are one of the most important pieces of kit you can buy.

Start with her level

The easiest way to choose cheer shoes is to think about your daughter’s current level.

Is she brand new to cheerleading? Has she been training for a while? Is she competing? Is she a flyer? Has her coach recommended a particular brand or style?

The answers to these questions will help you narrow down the right shoe.

A beginner may need something supportive and comfortable. A more experienced cheerleader may want something lighter and more flexible. A flyer may need a close-fitting shoe that gives bases a secure grip during stunts.

So rather than asking, “What is the best cheer shoe?”, it is better to ask:

What is the best cheer shoe for my daughter right now?

Best cheer shoes for beginners

If your daughter is new to cheerleading, she needs a shoe that is comfortable, supportive and practical.

Beginner cheerleaders are still learning the basics, so they usually benefit from a shoe with a little more structure and cushioning. At this stage, the shoe does not need to be the lightest or most advanced option available.

Good beginner cheer shoe options include:

These are sensible starting points for younger athletes or girls attending their first cheer classes. They offer the support needed for regular training while still giving your daughter the look and feel of a proper cheer shoe.

If your daughter has just started cheerleading, it can be tempting to buy the shoe that looks the most advanced or the one worn by older girls in the squad. However, that may not always be the best choice for a beginner.

At this stage, comfort, support and getting used to training in cheer shoes are usually more important than choosing the lightest performance shoe available.

If your daughter’s club has recommended a specific shoe, follow that guidance first.

Best cheer shoes for intermediate cheerleaders

Once your daughter has been cheerleading for a while, she may need a lighter and more flexible shoe.

Intermediate cheerleaders are usually doing more jumps, routines, basic tumbling and possibly some stunting. At this point, fit and flexibility become more important.

Good intermediate cheer shoe options include:

These shoes are suitable for girls who have moved beyond their first few sessions and are starting to train more seriously.

A shoe such as the Nfinity Vengeance is popular because it feels light, neat and performance-focused. However, it may not be the best first shoe for every beginner, especially if your daughter still needs more cushioning and support.

If your daughter is now training more often, preparing for competitions or becoming more confident with jumps and routines, it may be time to consider moving her into a more performance-focused cheer shoe.

Best cheer shoes for advanced cheerleaders and flyers

If your daughter is an advanced cheerleader, competes regularly or is a flyer, the fit becomes even more important.

Flyers need shoes that feel secure and close to the foot. This helps bases grip correctly during lifts and gives your daughter better control during stunts.

Good options for advanced cheerleaders and flyers include:

These are lightweight performance shoes designed for athletes who need precision, flexibility and a snug fit.

For flyers, the shoe should not feel loose or roomy. It should fit closely, almost like a glove, so the foot feels secure during lifts, throws and catches.

This is where buying cheer shoes becomes less like buying everyday trainers and more like choosing sports performance footwear. A slightly snugger fit can be important, especially when your daughter is working at a higher level.

What size cheer shoes should I buy?

Sizing is one of the biggest worries for mums buying cheer shoes online.

The right size depends on the brand, the shape of your daughter’s foot and how advanced she is.

As a general guide:

  • Kaepa and Zephz usually fit true to size

  • Nfinity and Nike tend to run slightly small, we recommend that you order half a size up from your street shoe size.

  • For Nfinity and Nike, many customers go up half a size

  • If your daughter has wider feet, going up half a size on any style may also help

For younger beginners, it is usually fine to allow a small amount of growing room. Around half a size can be sensible, especially if she is still growing quickly.

For intermediate and advanced cheerleaders, the shoe should fit more closely. Too much room inside the shoe can make it harder to move confidently.

For flyers, the fit should be snug and secure. A loose shoe is not ideal for stunting.

What if I order the wrong size?

We understand that choosing the right cheer shoe size can feel a little worrying, especially if you are buying online for your daughter for the first time.

If the shoes are not quite right, they can be returned for a refund or swapped quickly and efficiently for a different size, subject to our returns policy.

If you are exchanging a cheer shoe, we'll pick, pack and send the new size back to you with no further changes

This means you can order with more confidence, knowing that if the fit is not right first time, we will help you get it sorted as smoothly as possible.

Please make sure the shoes are tried on indoors and kept in a clean, unworn condition if you think you may need to return or exchange them.

Should I buy cheer shoes with growing room?

This depends on your daughter’s level.

For beginners, a little growing room is usually acceptable. You do not want the shoe slipping at the heel, but you also do not necessarily need an ultra-tight performance fit for a child who has just started.

For more experienced cheerleaders, especially those competing or flying, the fit should be more precise. At that level, performance and safety matter more than leaving lots of room to grow.

A good rule is:

Beginner: comfortable with a little room.

Intermediate: snug but not tight.

Flyer or advanced athlete: close, secure and performance-focused.

If you are unsure, think about how your daughter will use the shoes. A child attending one beginner class per week has different needs from a competition flyer training several times a week.

Why are most cheer shoes white?

Most cheer shoes are white because they create a clean, uniform look on the mat.

White shoes help teams look coordinated during routines. They also make foot placement easier to see, which can be useful for coaches, judges and squad presentation.

Some cheer shoes also come with colour inserts, allowing your daughter to match her shoes with her team colours. This can be especially appealing for younger cheerleaders who enjoy feeling part of the squad identity.

If your daughter’s club has asked for white cheer shoes, it is best to follow that guidance. White is still the most common and traditional colour for cheerleading footwear.

Can my daughter wear cheer shoes outside?

Ideally, no.

Cheer shoes are designed for indoor training, cheer mats and competition surfaces. They are not made for pavements, playgrounds, wet weather or everyday outdoor wear.

Wearing cheer shoes outside can:

  • Damage the soles

  • Reduce grip

  • Make the shoes dirty

  • Bring dirt onto cheer mats

  • Shorten the life of the shoe

To help them last longer, your daughter should keep her cheer shoes for training and competitions only.

A good habit is to carry them in a cheer bag and change into them when she arrives at training.

How long should cheer shoes last?

A good pair of cheer shoes should usually last a season or longer, depending on how often your daughter trains and how well the shoes are looked after, and how quickly her feet grow.

A beginner training once a week may find her shoes last well. A more advanced cheerleader training several times a week, tumbling regularly or competing often may wear through shoes more quickly.

To help cheer shoes last longer:

  • Keep them for training and competitions only

  • Avoid wearing them outdoors

  • Keep the soles clean

  • Store them in a cheer bag between sessions

  • Check regularly for signs of wear

If the soles have lost grip, the shoe feels loose, or the structure has started to break down, it may be time to replace them.

Should I ask her cheer coach first?

Yes. If your daughter belongs to a cheer club, it is always worth checking whether the coach recommends a particular shoe.

Some clubs prefer certain brands or styles, especially for competition teams. Others may simply ask for white cheer shoes.

Checking first can save you from buying a pair that is not suitable for the team.

If the coach has not specified a shoe, then choose based on your daughter’s level, fit and budget.

A simple way to choose

If you are still unsure, use this simple guide.

If she is brand new to cheerleading

Choose a supportive beginner-friendly shoe such as Kaepa Cheerlyte, Zephz Zenith or Nike Sideline.

If she has been training for a while

Look at a lighter, more flexible shoe such as Zephz Zenith, Kaepa Stellarlyte, Nfinity Vengeance or Nfinity Triumph.

If she is competing or flying

Look at a closer-fitting performance shoe such as Nfinity Vengeance or Nfinity Flyte.

If the club has recommended a shoe

Follow the club’s advice first.

If she has wide feet

Consider going up half a size, especially in brands that run smaller.

If you are unsure about sizing

Do not worry. Shoes can be returned for a refund or swapped quickly and efficiently for a different size, subject to our returns policy.

Final advice for mums

Buying cheer shoes for your daughter can feel confusing at first, especially if you are new to the sport. But once you know her level and what her club expects, the choice becomes much easier.

Start with these questions:

  • Is she a beginner, intermediate or advanced cheerleader?

  • Has her coach recommended a specific shoe?

  • Does she need a little growing room or a snug performance fit?

  • Does she have narrow, standard or wider feet?

  • Will she be training only, or competing too?

At Living Cheer, we specialise in cheerleading footwear and understand that many mums are buying cheer shoes for the first time. If you are unsure which pair is right, ask us before ordering and we will help you choose the best option for your daughter.

And remember, if the size is not quite right, the shoes can be returned for a refund or swapped quickly and efficiently for another size, subject to our returns policy.

The right cheer shoes will help your daughter feel comfortable, confident and ready to enjoy every training session, competition and routine.
